PODCAST – Item # B-23 / Various – Courage To Be Me / Various Alateen Literature

Episode 8 of my “CAL Chat” podcast is now available to listen to!  To hear it, please visit the show’s webpage at: www.calchat.libsyn.com (or you can subscribe to it for free on iTunes & Google Play Music as well & you’ll be notified every time a new episode is posted).

In part 1 of 3 of this very special Episode 8, four Alateen members share what they like best about Alateen literature – specifically the “Alateen Talk” newsletter (no item #), “Courage To Be Me” (B-23), page 26 (January 26th) from the daily reader “Alateen – A Day At A Time” (B-10), & pages 25-26 from the “Al-Anon/Alateen Service Manual” (P-24/27).  They talk about a favorite Step, what Tradition One means, & some powerful characteristics that can define someone affected by alcoholism.

alateen-lit-2The conversation continues in part 2 of 3 with three more Alateen members talking about their favorite parts from “Courage To Be Me”, page 8 from the booklet “Alateen Talks Back On: Detachment” (P-73), & pages 268-269 (September 24th & 25th) from the daily reader “Living Today In Alateen” (B-26).  They highlight a letter written to a parent, how they struggle with expectations of love, & how a member can eventually resemble the image on page 269 from “Living Today In Alateen”.  Also find out what message is repeated several times in “Courage To Be Me” & how it’s like a warm reminder!

In part 3 of 3, Alateen members share what they would like to say to Al-Anon members, & they directly address the teenager that is living with alcoholism that hasn’t been to an Alateen meeting yet.  They explain how Alateen is like a family environment & that they don’t bite!  The show wraps up with a unique “Last Words” section from a couple of Alateen group sponsors, where they cover the importance of hearing from Alateen members, how the Seventh Tradition is practiced from an Alateen perspective, the unexpected benefits of doing Alateen service, & how participating in this podcast is similar to doing a gratitude list!

CAL – Item # G-21 – Guidelines for Newsletter Editors

G-21WHAT I LEARNED: 1. For some reason I thought newsletters were only for Districts, but apparently they can also be for Areas & Al-Anon Information Services.

2. Reading this item made me miss our newsletter for District 6.  We voted to discontinue it in place of our website, however according to this Guideline, there’s a lot of info that usually appears in a newsletter that I usually don’t see on AFG websites.  I imagine it has something to do with that whole anonymity thing!  Capture

CAL – Item # P-73 – Alateen Talks Back on: Detachment

P-73WHAT I LEARNED: 1. This booklet came out in 1995 is the 6th (& last) one in the Alateen Talks Back series.  Originally planned as a 9-part series, the 6th piece was supposed to be about the 12 Steps & Traditions but the material eventually ended up in the larger book, Courage to Be Me (item # B-23).  The other booklets that never came to be were: Alateen Talks Back on: Tough Stuff (which dealt with difficult situations i.e. death, divorce, suicide, & abuse) & Alateen Talks Back on: Younger Members (which was added as an extra page insert in the regular Alateen Talk newsletter).

2. What I got out of this booklet is that Detachment = Focusing On Myself.  My two favorite lines are:

PinkFrom page 9: “Detachment is not caring less, it’s caring more for my own serenity.”

From page 16: “[Detachment] helps me to be me, & not become what others want me to be.”

CAL – Item # P-72 – Alateen Talks Back on: Higher Power

P-72WHAT I LEARNED: 1. It’s a shame this item was discontinued in 2000 because it’s my favorite of all the booklets in the Alateen Talks Back series.  Many of the sharings liken a Higher Power to a friend that’s always there.  Where there was once isolation, loneliness, & fear, there’s now constant comfort, confidence, & peace.

2. My favorite line is from page 29: “Trust is a five letter word but from it springs many others.  If I trust someone, I’m usually honest, open, caring, friendly, respectful & united with that person.”

CAL – Item # P-71 – Alateen Talks Back on: Sponsoring an Alateen Group

P-71WHAT I LEARNED: 1. Since it’s part of the Alateen Talks series, I thought this booklet was going to be Alateens talking about their group sponsors, but nope! Other than a few drawings from kids here & there, it’s basically a piece by & for grown-up Al-Anon members sharing about Alateen service.  I’m guessing it didn’t really serve the needs of Alateen members & didn’t quite reach its target Al-Anon audience because it came out in 1993 & was recommended for discontinuation in 2000 due to poor sales.  😦

2. All that being said, I did learn something new!  🙂 It’s the five S’s from page 16: “Steps, Serenity Prayer, Slogans, Sharing, & Sponsorship.”

3. My two favorite lines are both from page 25:

“This is another area of service that the more I try to give back what I’ve received, the more my debt increases.”

“Since I became a member of Al-Anon, I have been attracted to any situation in which I feel the presence of my Higher Power, & I have felt this presence strongly & frequently in & around these wonderful Alateen members & Sponsors.”

CAL – Item # P-70 – Alateen Talks Back on: Slogans

P-70WHAT I LEARNED: 1. Slogans are reminders of choices.

2. I have 2 favorite lines from this booklet (that I almost forget was written by Alateen members because it was so wise!):

From page 26: “I am happy today because: I have today to be happy in.”

From page 23: “As I search with courage for the rainbow, the sky clears.”rainbow-smiley-emoticon

CAL – Item # P-69 – Alateen Talks Back on: Serenity

P-69WHAT I LEARNED:  1. Ahhh, light a candle & put on some soothing music because today I read about Serenity (and yes, that’s with a capital “S”)!  At the end of this booklet are ten questions for meeting topics on Serenity & the last one, “Is Serenity contagious?” really made me think.  I know I’ve definitely “caught” it from my Sponsor even when I was in no mood to be serene.  How nice it is to know that some things in this program don’t have to be worked at, struggled for, earned, or deserved.  I can get it just because it’s infectious from healthy people!

2. My favorite line is from page 12: “Recognizing the world answers to its own Higher Power is inviting serenity’s peace to embrace me.”
